Oral Health considerations during pregnancy. In pregnancy there is an increase of hormones like estrogen and progesterone and many times we neglect brushing during this stage, which is a very wrong, the three most important thing to do is BRUSHING, FLOSSING and MOUTHWASH. Mouthwash, especially an antiseptic mouthwash. There are several problems we face because the gingiva is usually it has hypertrophy, hyperplastic and highly vascularised which can lead to swelling and bleeding gums during pregnancy. Again under the influence of hormones and here you can see that the producers or the people avoid going to the dentist. Woman who really need to go to the dentist at this stage to avoid further complications. The caries which is present or any kind of a dental problem can be carried to the fetus which can lead to a lot of other problems like Low birth weight or preterm labor. So there are several things that can affect the pregnancy. A pregnant woman can see a dentist between 14 to 28 weeks, that is the second trimester of the pregnancy. There are few things that are avoided during pregnancy like extraction which can keep it for a later period of stage that is the post partum. It is very important to keep our oral hygiene and do to keep our gums healthy. So we can go in for a round of scaling. There is a condition called as pyogenic granuloma or a pregnancy tumor, which is found between the gums, in the place of mastication and it causes pain. Sometimes it subsides by itself in 12 weeks of pregnancy. During pregnancy we go through nausea and vomiting. Nausea and vomiting, again during these stages, the acidic juices, the body fluids which will cause a lot of dental erosions and will also lead to dental caries. We can avoid this by going on for a dental checkup and getting a fluoride varnish or a fluoride gel application done.
