One of the dominant features of the city of Brno is Špilberk Castle, which stands on the top of the hill of the same name. The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century by Moravian Margrave and later Czech King Přemysl Otakar II. At the beginning it was the formal seat of Moravian Margraves. Later the castle changed into a fortress, which was besieged several times without success. At the end of the 18th century the castle was transformed into a dreaded prison. Today you can visit the castle and its infamous casemates. Today it houses the Museums of the City of Brno. You can visit guided tours, permanent exhibitions, the Gallery of the City of Brno as well as interesting temporary exhibitions from museum depositories and collections. The castle and its surroundings are also a tourist attraction and especially during the summer months various cultural events, music and theatre festivals take place here.
