The 2021 Vermont Organics Recycling Summit included a variety of FREE virtual events (webinars, facilitated online discussion groups, and other potential activities) celebrating the value of compost and the many ways it supports the health of the environment, the people and the economy. This year's Summit in conjunction with International Compost Awareness Week.
Tuesday's tour was at the Windham Solid Waste Management District (WSWMD) Compost Facility, which accepts food scraps, leaves, wood chips and grass clippings. The compost is monitored and temperatures are taken regularly. The temperatures are high enough and the material is kept in place for durations of time to kill pathogens. The end result is a beautiful compost product! It is used for gardens, lawns, repairs, erosion control and landfill/stormwater management. It is also an excellent top dressing/fertilizer for athletic fields and larger lawns.
