Halloween Special "It's Creepy Being Green" brought to you by Poison Ivy. The Blue Agave plant gives us tequila, margaritas and agave nectar. It's mainly pollinated by the endangered Mexican Long-nosed Bat (Leptonycteris nivalis) and Lesser Long-Nosed Bat (Leptonycteris curasoae). Blue Agave native to Jalisco, Mexico is the only species of agave that can be used to produce tequila which is certified by the Mexican government. In the last 20 years, the tequila industry has grown substantially. The cultivation of Blue Agave for tequila involves actively preventing the plants from flowering. The harvest kills the plants completely. So if the agaves don’t get to flower, and if agave plants are regularly killed to make our booze, the bats that depend on the Blue Agave have lost their nectar and pollen source, their main food items.
