The Humminbird Helix 5 G2 is the best fish finder for backcountry canoe fishing. The balance of weight, portability and a unique feature set make the Helix 5 the best tool for locating and catching fish in the Boundary Waters and Quetico. Boundary Waters fishing can be challenging, so I need a sonar that will help me quickly locate and remain on fish, decipher behavioral patterns and most importantly, identify key mid-lake structure that will hold fish year-round.
I have recently purchased my second model in the Helix 5 series and have been using one for almost 5 years both in open water and ice fishing. The Helix 5 has always worked well for me but unfortunately, I have not always been able to find a reliable transducer-mounting system that was compatible with a canoe as these systems are generally designed to be permanently mounted to motorboats.
A few years ago, after a tip from a friend, stumbled upon a company called RAM Mounts. I was immediately impressed with the quality of the clamp-style fishing rod holder and found out they made components for fish finder systems. I immediately set out to see if I could build a system, using the same gunwhale clamp style mount that was so secure on my rod holder.
Here are the five pieces I used to create my perfect backcountry canoe fishing sonar setup:
