This sweetheart old Gibson L-1 is built a bit like an oversized Gibson mandolin under the hood and that gives it a woody, midsy, punchy sort-of tone. It’s got plenty of volume but doesn’t have the same lower-mids “velvet” that the bigger, later archtops have. It’s more open and airy or breathy or something.
I think it sounds great for lead and fill work but I honestly like these best for strummy, cowboy-chord stuff. They sit right in their own pocket in a mix for that.
