STORYLINE
Police clashed with demonstrators in Athens for a second day Thursday at the same location where an elderly man shot himself in an apparent anti-austerity protest.
Several dozen youths in hoods and crash helmets smashed paving stones with hammers to throw at riot police on Athens' main Syntagma Square, where earlier hundreds had gathered to leave flowers, candles and messages for retired pharmacist Dimitris Christoulas.
Police responded with tear gas and flash grenades during the clashes, which lasted around 20 minutes.
77-year-old Christoulas shot himself in the head on Wednesday at the square, rekindling anti-austerity protests that have frequently turned violent over the past two years.
Many in Greece see the 77-year-old retired pharmacist as a martyr, whose suicide symbolises the cumulative effect of over two years of economic pain imposed to secure international bailouts shielding the country from bankruptcy.
