I had a bunch of Manzanita Cutoff pieces from previous projects I had been wondering what to do with. I almost tossed them into the trash. Glad I didn’t as I think this project turned out pretty nice considering it’s just a bunch of chunks. Turning epoxy is kind of a messy, difficult process. It’s really hard on the tools, they get dull very quickly. I tried a variety of tools to shape the project. My current thoughts on shaping epoxy is just use the most aggressive tool I have and get it shaped the way I like it. Then use a beveled carbide tipped tool to smooth out the chips and missing chunks that flew off. As for finishing, well that’s another interesting process. I waxed and polished only to find I wasn’t happy with the finish. I then sprayed with lacquer and then sanded it off waxed again and buffed with a grit wax paste using a drill mounted buffing wheel and the lathe turning about a 1000 RPMs. It finally started looking pretty good.
The tools I use or generally use
My favorite bowl gouge is the
3/4” Carter and son bowl gouge
The simple woodturning tools
Pointed carbide
Square carbide
Round carbide
I bevel my own round carbide tips with a diamond wheel.
