"Poles are essential for finding your balance and planting turns.
To determine your pole size, simply flip your ski poles upside down and grab under the baskets. Your elbows should bend at a 90 degree angle.
If the angle is greater than 90 degrees, try a slightly longer pole. If the angle is less than 90 degrees, try sizing down to a smaller pole.
If you are in between sizes, consider your skier style. For example, many powder hunters and park skiers choose to size down their poles so the extra length doesn't get in their way. On the other hand, skiers who like to plant their poles as they turn may prefer to size up.
Backcountry skiers have even more options when it comes to poles. When you ascend a steep slope, you need a shorter pole due to the pitch of the terrain. On your descent, you still want a standard pole length. Rather than carrying two poles, you can choose between an adjustable pole or a fixed pole with an elongated grip.
With an adjustable pole, you can shorten the length with a simple tab. When it's time to ski down, you can extend the poles to your standard length. Some skiers prefer adjustable poles because they are especially comfortable and compact.
A fixed pole with an elongated grip also works in place of an adjustable pole. On your ascent, simply grab the pole near the bottom of the grip and adjust your hands as needed with the pitch of the slope. When you ski down, grab the pole at the top of the grip as you would at the resort. Some skiers prefer fixed poles because they are generally more durable and simple to use.
Either of these options will work at the resort as well. Your preference is the biggest consideration when it comes to choosing poles, so grab what feels good, get out there, and have some fun."
