In 2005, a 21-year-old British student named Alex Tew came up with an innovative way to raise the money for his college education. He created a single-page website offering to display one million ads (one per pixel) for every dollar. To his surprise, www.milliondollarhomepage.com was an instant success, and advertisers flocked to buy pixels on the site. "I'm a pixel whore and proud of it," Alex brazenly declared. Then he sat back and watched the money roll in. The site launched on August 25, 2005, with a domain name acquisition cost of less than $75, and the final pixels were auctioned off on January 11, 2006, generating $1,037,100 in sales.
