In Nigeria, the possibility of yet another nationwide blackout looms large as the national grid system, operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from Osogbo in Osun State, suffered a catastrophic collapse.
Reports have indicated that the grid's output plummeted to a mere 273 megawatts of electricity, originating from just two out of the over 27 electricity generation sources. This crisis comes barely a week after TCN celebrated 400 days of grid stability.
Several Distribution Companies have confirmed that the grid failure occurred at 00:41 am local time, resulting in most of their feeders going offline.
As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, only five generating plants were contributing to the grid. Afam VI was generating 0.70MW, Dadinkowa showed no generation, Ibom Power contributed 32.90MW, Jebba provided 240MW, and Olorunsogo had zero generation.
Around 1:00 a.m. midnight, the total power on the grid had dwindled to a mere 35MW, indicating a complete grid collapse. Subsequently, it managed to recover to 273MW by around 3:00 a.m.
