Sometimes people experience surges of intense feelings like an increased heart rate, sweaty palms and shortness of breath. These can be very scary experiences, especially when they start without warning. When these panicky feelings occur, people may react by trying to escape or freezing. While unpleasant, the vast majority of these anxiety experiences are not an indication that something actually is wrong with us. Rather, they are the result of our body’s defense system becoming activated. In this video, UCLA psychologist Richard LeBeau describes why we may experience these symptoms and reviews two strategies for managing surges in anxiety, including how to find calmness through breathing.
