Libby, Montana is a rural hidden gem just 1.5 hours northwest of Glacier International Airport in Kalispell, MT and 1.5 hours east of Sandpoint, Idaho. Known for logging and mining, Libby got its name in the late 1860's by a prospector whose daughters name was Libby. The first automobile that came to Libby via the road from Kalispell was in 1913. The first sawmill was built in the winder of 1891 and the sustainable logging boom took off. Hence Libby got it's nickname the "Libby Loggers" which still stands to this day.
The days of logging and mining might have come to end (for now) in Libby, MT but the breath taking views of the Kootenai Falls, the peaceful camping along the Lake Koocanusa, hiking in the Cabinet Mountains, fishing on pristine waters, viewing one of a kind historical museums, and experiencing the warm welcome of the local residents and businesses is alive and kicking.
We encourage all Montanan's and visitors to come and experience a day or two in Libby, MT. Book a room at the Venture Inn while enjoying their made from scratch cookies. Dine at a local restaurant, walk the downtown, shop at a local store, and see why family focused folks are moving to raise their family in the 2000 plus community.
Come with our host Julie Mac as she explore the MUST SEE attractions in this quaint Lincoln Country town.
Note from their current Mayor: "Libby’s history is strongly rooted in the mining and timber industries. As those declined, we transitioned to tourism, taking advantage of the crystal-clear waters and remote opportunities we have to offer as well as cottage industries and small businesses, driven by folks who strongly desire to stay, raise a family, and prosper in God’s country."
