Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee announced on February 28, 2023, that the city’s Covid mask mandate would be scrapped from March 1. Rules about wearing face coverings in some locations including healthcare facilities will still be enforced, however. Speaking through a translator, Lee told reporters at a press conference that the decision to end one of the world’s longest mask mandates was based on the local coronavirus situation and the winding down of a case surge in influenza and other respiratory viruses. The announcement also came a day after neighbouring city Macau lifted its own general outdoor mask-wearing rules.
