Effective communication can be the difference between victory or defeat.

It can be the difference between being ignored while wide open or scoring the game-winning goal that results in a scholarship.

Tip Number 1 for communication in soccer games - Demand the Ball when You are Open

Most players are not even confident enough to ask for a pass let alone demand the ball.

This hurts your individual development because you are not getting as many touches on the ball during games.

It also hurts your team because by not demanding the ball, you likely won’t receive it even if you are open.

However, avoid demanding the ball when you are covered.

Teammates will get annoyed and will be less likely to pass you the ball if you are always asking for it but shouldn’t be.

Tip Number 2 on How to Communicate in Soccer is to Yell for the ball

Coaches and teammates love players who yell for the ball.

It communicates confidence so coaches will want to pick you for their team during tryouts, and to your teammates, it says that you will do something with the ball once you receive it.

In fact, researchers have found that yelling actually boosts strength, which is great during a soccer game.

Tip Number 3 for how to improve communication in football - Use Your Hands

Holding up your arms while shouting for the ball is a good way to get a teammates attention.

Also, use your hands to show where you want your teammate to pass the ball.

For example, put your hand in front of you if you want to receive a pass directly to you.

Put your hand out to the side if you want the ball played to either side of you

Point in front of you if you want the ball played ahead of you so you can run onto it.

Time

This lets your teammate know they do not have pressure.

When a ball passed ahead of you so you can run to it.

Switch

This instructs your teammate to pass the ball to the other side of the field, often in the air.

Turn

Say this when a teammate receives a pass with their back facing the direction they need to travel, but have room to turn and head up-field.
