Why do the flags of the United States and Liberia look so similar?
Transcript:
If you take a look at the flag of Liberia, you might notice that something looks a little bit familiar. So, why is this?
Well, to understand the full story, we have to go back to when the U.S. was first founded in 1776.
Around this time, a movement called the American Colonization Society started to arise. This movement was characterized by the effort of sending African Americans from the U.S. over to Africa. Despite this movement never really getting too popular, it nonetheless resulted in a colony in Africa, which would later become known as Liberia. They would end up choosing a flag that was heavily inspired by the flag of the United States.
However, the story doesn’t end here. You see, over on the other side of the world, Malaysia also has a flag extremely similar to the other two. Although you might think this flag was also inspired by the U.S., that wouldn’t be the case.
Malaysia’s flag was actually inspired by the flag of the British East India company. Which is significant because Malaysia used to be a British colony.
