On Christmas Eve last year, the body of 28-year-old James McLaren was found at a waste recycling plant in Houghton-le-Spring. He had been missing for more than 24 hours after disappearing during a night out in Sunderland.
An inquest into his death opened at Sunderland's Coroner's Court. A jury heard it was not unusual for him not to be in contact with people after a night out and he had previously fallen asleep in bins while drunk.
