At least a thousand troops had been deployed at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine by late yesterday.
The troops started moving in early and assisted the police in a crackdown on the striking miners.
The police fired rubber bullets and teargas in the first use of force at the mine since 34 people were killed by the police last month
