Hierapolis Ancient City
Hierapolis (Greek: Ἱεράπολις 'holy city') is an important settlement near Pamukkale (Denizli) and famous for its healing thermal waters in ancient times. Founded by the Pergamon Kingdom in the 2nd century BC, this city took its name from the Amazon Queen Hiera. It served as both a religious center and a health center throughout ancient times.
Hierapolis attracted people with its healing waters and impressive travertines. The city gained great fame during the Roman period for its baths, thermal pools and health centers. Today, the Cleopatra Pool, fed by the hot water springs in Pamukkale, is an important historical point that attracts visitors.
Hierapolis also attracts attention with its magnificent structures. The ancient theater with a capacity of 12,000 people, the Agora, the Temple of Apollo and the Necropolis reflect the importance of the city in ancient Roman times. Especially the large necropolis area reveals that this city is also a city of death and rebirth.
The city, located on the earthquake zone, was severely damaged by the Nero period earthquake and was completely renovated. After these successive earthquakes, the city lost all of its Hellenistic character and took on the appearance of a typical Roman city. Hierapolis became a very important center in the Byzantine period after the Roman period. This importance stems from being a Christian center (metropolis) from the 4th century AD and the killing of Philip, one of Jesus' apostles, here in the 80s AD.
Hierapolis, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, continues to fascinate its visitors today as a place where both history and nature are intertwined.
