The 14th of November is World Diabetes Day. This year of 2024, throughout the month of November, at The Lifestyle & Metabolic Medicine Centre, we decided to offer a series on nutritional literacy. The purpose of this series was to give people living with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity and other metabolic diseases a framework to understand nutrition, toxins, and the role of food as a root cause in their ailment. This is key to achieving clinical remission through affordable and accessible lifestyle interventions. This doesn't negate that bariatric surgery or meal replcement programs are effective in achieving remission for these conditions.
The audience for the live sessions was non-medical and included many without a scientific background. As such, the talks were designed to be understood by people with diverse backgrounds. There is minimal use of medical jargon, and terms are defined in simple language as these talks are meant to be for patient education.
The talks have been compiled and broken down into modules:
Module 1 - What is food
Module 2 - Food Journaling
Module 3 - Health Goals
Module 4 - Nutrition Planning - Proteins
Module 5 - Nutrition Planning - Fats
Module 6 - Nutrition Planning - Carbohydrates
