Britain captured the Ethiopian city of Magdala in 1868 and looted several royal treasures, including a three-tiered gold crown. Ethiopia has repeatedly requested the return of these artifacts, but Britain has refused, saying they were "legally acquired." In 2022, The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) announced that it would be willing to loan some of these artifacts to Ethiopia on a long-term basis, but has not said whether it would be willing to return them permanently.
