(8 Oct 2015) Germany's interior minister said on Thursday that the EU wants to establish a mutually agreeable policy with its member nations on how to deal with the migration crisis as ministers gather for a summit in Luxembourg.
Thomas de Maiziere said officials will hold an "open and frank discussion to solve all these problems together with the Balkan states and of course together with Turkey."
EU justice and interior ministers will hold a joint session with their counterparts from the Balkans and some Middle East nations to assess the plight of people fleeing war and poverty to seek refuge in Europe.
The EU has rules in place for deporting those who do not qualify for asylum or residency but less than 40 percent of people are actually sent home.
The focus on deportation and detention makes for uncomfortable debate as Europe faces a humanitarian emergency unseen since World War II.
"The control of external borders, immigration generally, and returns - it's all a package. We have to get to work on it," Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn said as he arrived to chair the meeting.
