Welcome to week 9 of pregnancy!
This week, baby is about the size of a Hershey Kiss, or a pecan (but how do you pronounce it?! “Pee-can” or “Pa-Kahn” ?!). Baby’s heart is working to develop all of the little valves and parts inside of its four chambered heart, and you may be able to pick up the heartbeat with a Doppler radar at this point. Baby has developed their eyeballs under those closed eyelids, which will stay fused together until around week 27. Bones are forming at a rapid rate, so taking some calcium or vitamin D (most likely included in your prenatal supplement) is very beneficial at this time. Fingers and toes are still webbed, but are starting to get longer now and will soon appear as individual digits in an ultrasound. Baby is going to start more rapidly gaining weight to fall on it’s own growth curve now, which varies more from baby to baby than the growth of the first 9 weeks will (hence the importance of a dating ultrasound before or around now).
For expectant mothers, you still in the throes of rough first trimester symptoms- hopefully finding relief in a few more weeks! Some people start to feel fetal movements at this time, in the way of a small flutter, similar to a gas bubble. Your mucous plug is forming now, which is a protective plug in your cervix creating an additional barrier between Baby and germs and bacteria on the outside.
