So, sit back, grab a pen and paper, and get ready to learn everything you need to know about exposing covert narcissism in family court!
It's important to know that you should not come with a definition of narcissism to give to the Judge or come with a list of covert narcissistic characteristics. Don't use the word covert narcissist in court. You can expose them for their behavior without using the actual words. Instead, you want to make the covert narcissist to reveal themself to the court officials during the litigation process during the different hearings.
Keep in Mind
-The covert narcissist will file friviouls motions and other filings with the court in an attempt to confuse the court and delay proceedings
-The covert narcissist may file false child abuse charges against you
-You can ask the court for a motion for mental health examination for the covert narcissist
During the trial
Courts will consider the factors for custody and determine what is in the child's best interest. One of those factors here in Maryland is "character and reputation of the party". During the trial, you want to trip the covert narcissist up in cross examination. You want to use their lies against them, get the covert narcissist to say yes to a lot of things, lead the covert narcissist to their own trap. Start off with questions that the covert narcissist will most likely answer "yes" to. Questions such as, "Do you love your children?", "Are you a good parent?" The, show the covert narcissist other evidence that contradicts those answers such as text messages of the covert narcissist not picking up the child, denying any request for help with doctor's appointments or education assistance for the child.
Also, be on guard during the litigation process. Don't trust the covert narcissist. The covert narcissist may ask to meet up with you during the litigation process or talk via telephone. Be very wary of that, they will attempt to manipulate you!
BONUS: Keep copies of everything, hire a divorce coach if needed. A divorce coach will keep you grounded and help you stay on track during the process.
