South Korean President Park Geun-Hye yesterday (Monday) urged Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to reaffirm the right perception of history, which was carried on his predecessors' statements of apology.
Stressing such a reaffirmation by Abe should be reflected in his upcoming statement to be issued later this month to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two, Park said "reconciliation with the past" is important to restore the current sour relations between Seoul and Tokyo.
Park's comments were made during her meeting with Katsuya Okada, head of Japan's main opposition Democratic Party, at her office.
Park added that now is "the last chance" for the two countries to settle the issue of the so-called "comfort women", the victims of the Japanese military's sex slavery during the war.
Okada responded by saying that he
feels "sorry and shameful" for the victims. He took office as the party leader in January and has selected Seoul as the first destination for his overseas trip.
