"I especially heard the noise because I was home and the apartment moved terribly and then there was a huge plume of smoke and I approached and I heard that they were working on the gas pipes. There had been a leak and they called the firemen and then it exploded. From what I heard there must be twenty wounded."
9. SOUNDBITE: (French) Colonel Serge Delegue, Lyons firefighter
"The firemen are in the process of continuing to rummage through looking to see if there are other people under the rubble. We think not but we are checking as we were doing as the explosion occurred. We are in the process of securing the whole area with the police to avoid any further dangers. This will take a few more hours but the emergency is to assure there are no more people under the rubble."
Reporter's question: "And the flames?"
"The flames - they're not the most serious. It is the gas within the pipe - it's better that it burns. It's usual that we would let it burn."

STORYLINE:
One fire officer died and 26 people were injured after road workers pierced a gas pipe, setting off an explosion on Thursday in the southeastern French city of Lyon, authorities said.
The blast occurred just as fire officers were evacuating a nearby building as a result of the gas leak, according to Lyons fire department chief Colonel Serge Delaigue.
It is understood the firefighter was killed inside the building.
Eye witness Alain, who preferred not to give his surname, told AP Television: "I especially heard the noise because I was home and the apartment moved terribly and then there was a huge plume of smoke and I approached and I heard that they were working on the gas pipes. There had been a leak and they called the firemen and then it exploded. From what I heard there must be twenty wounded."
Chief firefighter Colonel Delaigue told reporters: "The firemen are in the process of continuing to rummage through looking to see if there are other people under the rubble. We think not but we are checking as we were doing as the explosion occurred."
Roads remained closed for several hours, after the incident.
