South Sumatra Province has quite large natural resources of coal energy. It is estimated that the coal reserves in South Sumatra reach 22.24 billion tons. The coal mining industry in this area is managed by PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam. Realization of coal production by this company throughout 2018 reached 26.36 million tons. The large volume of production raises new challenges in terms of coal transportation. An important consumer of coal produced by Bukit Asam is PLTU Suralaya in Banten. PLTU Suralaya is one of the main electricity suppliers in Java. The coal which is the fuel for the PLTU has so far been fully supplied by Bukit Asam. To ensure electricity supply, coal shipments must be maintained. For that we need a good means of transportation. The condition of the Sumatran cross roads and river transportation in South Sumatra is not proper, especially on the Musi River which can cause transportation to be hampered due to sedimentation, so that trains are the main choice for transporting coal produced from PT Bukit Asam. From Tanjung Enim, coal is transported by freight train to Tarahan, then by ship to Suralaya. To accommodate the large volume of coal production, the number of carriages was increased and the series became very long, because of that the coal transport train is known as the long chain coal train or abbreviated as the Babaranjang
