Texas is one of the wealthiest and most powerful states in the US - consistently ranking in the top 5, and often top three, of many such metrics. However, this was not predestined. Texas got its start as a filibuster state, wherein white colonists settled the mexican state of Tejas before revolting for their independence due to the centralization of power under Santa Anna. And also slavery. The independent republic of texas was very eager to join the US, but this remained highly controversial within America itself. But this of course begs the question, what if Texas remained independent?
