The world of design has developed greatly in the last years and designers take more responsibility for their work. Lack of resources, pollution, employment conditions and social responsibility are among the factors that make designers think twice before putting a product on the market. Can designers use their creations and images as a medium to awaken people to consider social issues that are often invisible because they are quite simply not thought of as interesting?
Sigga Heimis is an industrial designer, born in Iceland and educated in Italy. She has worked for years in the field of industrial design, mainly for the furniture industry. She was one of the core designers at the headquarters of IKEA in Sweden for 8 years and following this she took on a design manager role for Fritz Hansen in Denmark. She then founded her own studio and moved back to Iceland after living abroad for many years. Today she runs her Studio Sigga Heimis and works for international companies all over the world. She focuses on design and design management and recently she has concentrated on the development of design and social responsibility within the field. Her collaboration with Corning Museum of Glass is one of her main projects and she teaches and holds lectures worldwide in numerous Design universities and institutions in various continents.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
