Oil painting of a Cornwall sunset in one session (alla prima). This was a practice painting that I did for fun using a plein air sketch for reference. I was waiting for lots of larger paintings to dry so thought I would spend an afternoon painting this sunset that I sketched in May.
I was overlooking Godrevy lighthouse on the North Cornwall coastline. The sketch was made on location with a mixture of charcoal, graphite and oil sticks.
I thought it would make an interesting subject to paint in one session in the studio on a small 12"x10" canvas. It proved quite tricky because of the lack of contrast. I found it difficult to re-capture the spontaneity that I had in the original sketch but I enjoyed my afternoon painting.
