As part of our boiler guide series, we're now going to explore some of the products you may choose to have installed with your new boiler. It's very important to consider and to budget for the heating controls and the filters that often go in at the time of installation. Choosing the right ones can help with the efficiency of the system, have it operate at optimal levels and of course the life span of the whole installation as well.
Heating controls are divided into two main categories. The programmer, which sets the times when the heating will come on and off, and the room thermostat which controls the temperature. Here we'll explore each.
PROGRAMMERS
Programmers allow you to set different times for different days of the week for your heating and your hot water to come on. They can take into account how often you're at home, the rooms you use most often, and sometimes respond to the weather outside by adjusting your boilers outputs accordingly.
ROOM THERMOSTATS
Room thermostats will measure the air temperature in the room and allow you to set the level you find comfortable. It will then communicate with your boiler to switch it on and off to maintain the temperature that you've set.
PROGRAMMABLE ROOM THERMOSTATS
Programmable room thermostats combine the functions of room thermostats and a programmer to control the heating of your whole house from just one unit. You can control the temperature and the time and set it in the same place. These can be more efficient because they allow the boiler just to top up heat when the house requires it.
THERMOSTATIC RADIATOR VALVES
Thermostatic radiator valves are fitted to radiators so that you can control the temperature of that particular room by altering the flow of hot water into the radiator. As the temperature in the room increases or decreases, the valve slowly opens or shuts, responding to the ambient air temperature in the room and changing the amount of hot water flowing through the radiator. This helps maintain a consistent temperature, one that you've set. TRVs - thermostatic radiator valves can save you money on your bills as well as your home's carbon footprint, by insuring your heating system uses energy efficiently. Rooms that aren't often used can easily be turned right down, for example.
Bear in mind that traditional stand alone thermostats and programmers control your heat for the whole house. New to the market though, are an exciting range of intelligent controls that give you a lot more flexibility to fit around your lifestyle. Here are some great examples:
WORCESTER BOSCH - THE WAVE
The wave is part of Worcester's smart controls offering. It allows you to control your heating from an app on your smartphone over an internet connection. It allows you to take advantage of some of Worcester's best features, including load and weather compensation. This means that the wave will sync via your home wifi with local weather forecasts to optimise start and stop times for the boiler, and its heat modulation to minimise heat loss and maximise your gas usage efficiency. It also uses your phone's GPS to learn times when you are likely to be home, and therefore require the heating on. The phone app allows you to plan ahead or change the heating schedule at the touch of a button. Even when stuck in the office, coming back from the airport or wherever you may need.
HEATMISER - NEOSTAT
Heatmiser also offers an intelligent heating control in its Neostat range. It also allows you to control your heating from anywhere. The phone app allows you to create and save new programs and alter settings via your smartphone. Changes are instant, so if you schedule changes and you're going on holiday altering the settings are only one click away. Multi zoning also gives you a complete control over different heating zones, in your house or your underfloor heating. This is another great adaptation to busy schedules of people today.
HONEYWELL - EVOHOME
So lastly, the Evohome system. This give you all the same smartphone convenience of the previous two models, with an easy to use app for controlling your heating. In addition, it uses intelligent thermostatic radiator valves in each room. These wireless radiator valves can be opened and closed remotely by your smartphone, allowing you a level of control right down to each individual room. Forgot that mother in law was coming to stay? No problem, quickly turn on the radiator in the spare room whilst on your way home. And the Evohome system is wireless, so installing it doesn't require a great deal of disruption or upheaval.
With all these different options available, your heating installation expert is the one best placed to come and advise you, talk you through your options and see what's best for your lifestyle, your home and your comfort.
