Hybrid Design and Prefabricated Data Center Builds
In this video, Piotr Kowalski, Vertiv EMEA Solution Architect Director, discusses Hybrid Data Center design with Alan Howard, Data Center Market Analyst at Omdia.
Some key takeaways:
Vertiv prefabricated modular solution portfolio
For many years, prefabricated modular solutions were one-off, purpose-built solutions often served as containerized data centers. As the data center industry has turned toward standardization to deploy new data centers quickly and manage operational costs, Vertiv has developed standardized integrated modular solutions with updated designs and configurations to address this need.
Integrated modular data center design types
The Vertiv SmartMod family can be customized through an online configurator allowing our customers to configure and price a small data center solution for large-scale deployments or small and medium Enterprise deployments with capacities up to 100 KW of IT load within a single module solution and 200 KW of load within a dual module solution ranging up to a 600 KW modularized design in a SmartMod combo. These installations are also faster to deliver because there is no design phase.
Modular data center solutions
Unlike the old data center containers, a Vertiv modular data center solution is a custom data center infrastructure we design and build. Normally, this would be between a one and four-megawatt data center building, although it could be smaller. This can save up to 40% of the time it would take to build a data center in the traditional manner.
Hybrid designs for prefabricated modular data centers
Hybrid design usually is for hyperscale data center customers who have extremely large deployments and are very specific about their design preferences. Unlike SmartMod or even custom solution prefab data centers, our hybrid design solution combines the two worlds of traditional data center construction and off-site prefabricated components. So a traditionally constructed data center shell building is later outfitted with off-site prefabricated components for power and cooling as well as all other components of the typical data center infrastructure. The benefit is the ability to speed up the traditional data center build by preparing the components as the data center shell is being built.
Benefits of a hybrid data center build
The main benefit of hybrid design for hyperscale facilities is the speed of construction achieved by paralleling the work on-site and offsite, limiting construction time by up to 40% versus traditional data center builds. For global customers, simplified and standardized designs that are predefined building blocks allow for consistency of design for every data center project. One of the most popular components of the hybrid design is energy centers, which are either a fully enclosed power module or a skid-mounted power solution that is later fitted out within the existing building. These have become standard in hyperscale deployments because it allows the customer to limit the traditionally constructed data center building footprint by up to 30%. Energy centers also increase the ability to scale and adapt the growth of power to business needs through just adding additional components outside of the data center building.
