Follow the story behind the real Inglorious Basterds, as we recount the true story of Jewish-American refugees from Nazi Germany who joined the OSS and undertook secret missions behind enemy lines during World War II, notably Operation Greenup. Operation Greenup's team, led by Fred Mayer and including Hans Wijnberg, parachuted into Austria to gather intelligence, disrupt enemy operations, and monitor the Brenner Pass supply route. Fred Mayer, posing as a wounded German officer, infiltrated key Nazi facilities, collected critical intelligence, and, despite being captured and tortured by the Gestapo, never broke under pressure.
From the World Wars and the atomic bomb to the Space Race and digital revolution, The Modern Age explores the world-changing events and people of the 20th century. Every week we’ll be bringing you award-winning documentaries that journey into the century that defined our way of life.
