Alberta is changing the way they report COVID-19 deaths after facing controversy over the death of a 14-year-old boy whose death was attributed to COVID-19, but died from cancer.
On Tuesday, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced that a 14-year-old with severe health issues had died of COVID-19.
Additional information provided after indicated COVID-19 was not a cause of death, according to Hinshaw.
“This incident has caused suffering for many, and again I apologize for this.”
Hinshaw announced Thursday that moving forward the province would not be publicly reporting any COVID-19 deaths in people under 18 until the review process has been completed.
According to Hinshaw, Alberta Health will “prioritize accuracy over timeliness in these cases.”
916 cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Alberta Thursday with 30 new deaths related to the disease.
There are currently 1,016 patients being treated for COVID-19 in Alberta hospitals with 231 in the ICU.
