For decades, a government-backed effort took tens of thousands of Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit children from their homes, and tried to take away their culture and identity in residential schools. Nearly 3,000 children are known to have died while at these institutions and it’s likely many other deaths were not documented. The abuse many experienced has affected generations of families. Abigail Bimman explains how this shameful part of Canada's history is now being recognized.
