In this lesson, we will learn about the important conic section known as an ellipse. First, we will examine the equation of an ellipse and compare it to the familiar equation of a circle. Next, we determine what the focus of an ellipse physically means, and why there are two foci instead of just one.
Finally, we graph many ellipses and write the equations down to understand that as we move the ellipse closer to a circle, the equation of the ellipse in fact becomes the equation of a circle.
