Unions are putting pressure on the Morrison government to include support for casual workers in its coronavirus stimulus package to be released this week.
ACTU Secretary Sally McManus has called on the government to provide more assurances to casual workers.
“Hopefully employers will pay people, but they are under no obligation to,” she said.
“This is what we are really worried about. We are worried these workers are having to chosen between feeding themselves, paying the bills, or going to work.”
Speaking to Sky News on Monday, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg kept his cards close to his chest on the details of the stimulus package, which is expected to be worth more than $10 billion.
“Business needs to be flexible during this time and we want employees to feel confident about their job security,” he said.
“We are going to be meeting with employee and employer groups over the weeks and months to ensure everyone is getting the best possible support."
