The story of Lord Krishna begins in Mathura, where the evil King Kamsa has heard a prophecy that the eighth child of his sister Devaki will kill him one day. Fearing for his life, Kamsa imprisons Devaki and her husband Vasudeva and kills each of their first seven children. After they implore Lord Vishnu to help their ill-fated eighth child, Vishnu himself takes the form of Krishna, and is born to Devaki. On the stormy night of Lord Krishna's birth, Vasudeva is able to break free from his shackles, sneak past the guards, and carry baby Krishna across the Yamuna river to Gokula, where he safely leaves him in the home of Yashoda and Nanda.
