The Congo-Ocean railway was built to transport minerals and other natural resources from the heart of Africa. Transport by boat was only possible as far as the spectacular but utterly impassable Congo Rapids at Brazzaville.
The railway instead had to navigate the almost equally forbidding Mayombe Escarpment. In the heart of the jungle the original line was eventually beaten into submission and a new line was built.
But this new line has far from solved the problems and holds one of the worst rail crash blackspots in the world.
