The federal government has announced it will review travel advice for Italy after the entire country was placed into an effective lockdown overnight.
The announcement on Tuesday afternoon came amid confirmation of 103 domestic cases of COVID-19 in Australia as the outbreak continues to spread across the nation.
The Italian government has threatened jail time for anyone flouting travel bans as the country goes into lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis.
Police officers are meeting trains carrying passengers from locked-down zones such as Venice and Milan and travellers are required to provide details and a reason for travel.
A decree covering Rome said travellers from affected areas were required to self-isolate.
