Here it is everyone!, a look back at some of the amazing landscapes I've been able to experience and shoot during 2021, showcased through the dynamic and immersive perspective of an FPV drone.
There is so much natural beauty to be found in Western Australia, and this video only covers a small amount of what exists in the lower part of the state. From the breathtaking waterfalls of the Darling Scarp, to the diverse and spectacular coastline of the South West of Western Australia, I've been lucky enough to capture some amazing landscapes during 2021. Hopefully I can include some areas from the north of our state during 2022, as well as further along the southern coastline.
I gota say I'm pretty proud of this video edit! Learning fpv has been a very frustrating experience at times, but I've kept at it, and that determination has finally started paying off, especially during the second half of the year. It was about a year ago that I first transitioned into flying in the "real world" from flying in the sim, and to be honest it was a complete disaster, to say those first few months were frustrating would be a massive understatement. Fast forward a few months, and Winter kicked in HARD in the Perth area, which forced me out of my comfort zone to try and make the most of the conditions at that point in time (technically, whilst it's a "2021 showreel", it's actually more like a "last 6 months of" kinda thing haha, as none of this footage was shot before July).
If I could have shown myself this video a year ago and said "you'll make an edit like this in a year", I would not have believed it. At that point, to just keep the drone in the air for 3min without crashing was an achievement to be celebrated, so being able to fly for a full pack, in a controlled manner, without being a nervous wreck, seemed like such an impossible task. And whilst I've still got a very long way to go to get to the level I want to be at, I'm still very proud of how far I've come, and watching this edit just makes me happy.
I hope you guys enjoy this video as much as I've enjoyed putting it together, and as always I'd love to hear your feedback, be it good or bad. I know I've been pretty quiet here on youtube for a while, but I'll be focusing more on video stuff this year, and if all goes to plan I'll hopefully have some really useful, engaging, and entertaining content for you all.
Backing track "The End Of Heartache (Resident Evil version)" is by Killswitch Engage.
Whilst I usually try and use royalty free tracks from Epidemic Sound, sometimes you just have a vision for how something is going to work, and this particular track just kept coming to mind whenever I was thinking about doing an edit like this one, and I honestly don't think I could have found a better track for what I wanted to achieve.
Footage is a mix of GoPro hero6 and hero9, and the drones used were a pair of custom built 5" FPV freestyle quads, one being an ImpulseRC Apex frame, and the other a Diatone Roma, with both drones running the dji digital system for video feed, TBS Crossfire for the RX, and running on 4s batteries.
For those interested, it was the Roma that I submarined at Canal Rocks (shout out to the local legend I only know as "Tim" for going in and retrieving it for me, and restoring my faith in humanity in the process haha) and the only things to survive were the gopro, the frame, and the motors. It was an expensive mistake that one, but on the bright side it makes for a pretty rad way to end an fpv edit!
