Let's take a closer look at the mower we'll be using for the groomer conversion build.
We bought this mower from Tim Hugo for $300 Perth dollars. The engine runs and only the catcher and the rubbers are missing.
The mower is a Scott Bonnar 45. We know it's a 45 by ID badge, the location of the catcher at the front of the machine, the shape of the sides, and the design of the deck.
As a "solid" deck (i.e. a single panel rather than two rails), we know this machine was manufactured between the late 1970's and early 1980's. Unfortunately no factory records of serial numbers remain.
The engine is likely a Briggs & Stratton 2.25 or 2.5 HP. It starts easily and runs but does leak oil.
The mower is dirty and rusty but a lot of these rebuild projects start life like this. After a wipe down and once the paint has been removed, we'll be able to assess individual components and decide what needs to be repaired or replaced.
It's worth noting the bulk of the components on these mowers are replaceable with second-hand spare parts or re-engineered/re-envisioned parts. The main components you'll reuse (at a minimum) include:
• The rear roller halves
• The rear roller shaft and pawl holder
• The rear roller bearing cups
• The soleplate
• The chain cover
• The handlebar cover plate
Everything else can be bought new (even replacement chain covers are now being made, albeit from fibreglass). Some of the parts you may consider replacing include:
• The motor
• The catcher
• The reel and bottom blade
• The front roller
• The cutter clutch
• Some or all bolts and bearings
• The height adjuster mechanism
• The thrust pad
• Sprockets and chains
• The handlebars and grips
• The sides and/or deck/rails
• And so on… it's a long list!
The series sponsors manufacture and sell the very best in quality replacement parts and a new period-correct catcher has just arrived from OLDTime Parts. We'll be taking at look at it in the next video (please subscribe to be notified as new videos are released!).

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!
