(15 Sep 2016) Thousands of devotees in Mumbai gathered at the city's beaches on Thursday to bid farewell to the popular elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesha after a ten-day festival to celebrate his birth.
Ganesha idols of all sizes, decorated with garlands of marigolds and roses were paraded through the streets before their ritual immersion in the sea, an act that symbolises sending the god back to his mythical home in the snow-capped mountains taking all the worries and problems of his worshipers with him.
Devotees sang and danced to beating drums in processions.
During the annual 10-day festival, Hindu families worship Ganesha, the god of knowledge, wisdom and good fortune, at their homes and collectively in street corners.
All Hindu prayers begin with an invocation to Ganesha.
