In this video I'm talking about South Africa's indigenous grape variety which is Pinotage. Pinotage was created in 1925 at Stellenbosch University by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault. According to many sources the idea of creating Pinotage was to get something like a Pinot Noir that will do well in warm climate of South Africa. The best examples of Pinotage can be found in the following South African districts: Franschhoek, Paarl, Swartland, Walker Bay, Wellington, Worcester and Stellenbosch, which is the birth place of the Pinotage grape variety. Did you know, that apart from South Africa, Pinotage is also grown in the US, Germany, New Zeeland, Brasil and Zimbabwe. Did you know, that the oldest South African winery is Groot Constantia and dates back to 1685. Did you know, that 55% grape planted in South Africa are white and 45% are red. The most planted red grape variety in South Africa is Cabernet Sauvignon and most planted white Variety is Chenin Blanc, called locally steen.
The wine used in this video was Kanonkop Pinotage, Stellenbosch, South Africa 2019.
The video was recorder at The Corkscrew Wine and Spirit Merchants in Dublin
