Following the collapse of the Russian Empire during the First World War, Finland emerged as an independent state. Its newfound sovereignty, however, was constantly threatened by the emergent Soviet Union which had its own security concerns in the region. Despite the Finnish government's efforts to maintain foreign alliances and a neutral stance, the country was invaded on November 30, 1939, marking the beginning of the Winter War.
The Finnish army, though poorly equipped, mounted a fierce resistance, inflicting heavy casualties on the invaders. Despite their valiant efforts, the Finns ultimately had to accept their untenable position and sue for peace. As a result, Finland ceded roughly 10% of its territory to the Soviet Union in the war’s aftermath.
Lacking the strength to reclaim this territory on their own, the Finns entered into an uneasy alliance with the Nazi Germany. Finland subsequently joined Operation Barbarossa, kickstarting the Second Soviet-Finnish War, also known as the Continuation War. Through their alliance, the Finns were able to secure German arms deliveries throughout this conflict, including a number of StuG III assault guns. Despite their late arrival in small numbers, these vehicles still took their toll on the Soviet Armor in the final months of the war.
