WEST LINDSEY PARISH #63: THONOCK

This is the parish of Thonock – one of the strangest ones West Lindsey has, on the face of it at least. Mind you to understand why it exists and how it came to be you have to understand its history

Thonock has been around since at least the time of Domesday. It used to be an actual village but now its not much more than just a handful of scattered houses and farms

Administratively, it used to be part of Gainsborough until Thonock civil parish was created from Gainsborough in 1894. It was dissolved in 1974, but then re established again sometime after that.

Its population, literally only a handful of people, is not recorded with Gainsborough – rather it’s recorded with Blyton, and Blyton parish council look after the area Thonock covers

And in actual fact, its some area. Most of Thonock parish is covered by an enormous golf course – Gainsborough Golf Club – which I’ll show you later

There’s also a cemetery to see here, as well as some impressive lodges which belong to Thonock Park. The Gainsborough to Grimsby railway line traverses the parish too crossing its two main roads

One of those roads is the A159 between Gainsborough and Blyton, whilst the other is called The Little Belt or The Belt Road depending on which part of it you’re on

It’s definitely not a parish which you can walk around. There aren’t even any footpaths across the golf course. Seatbelts on then, this one’s a car job!
