Taaffeite is one of the top ten rare stones in the world. It has an interesting history of its discovery as a new mineral. Richard Taaffe discovered the stone in a Dublin jewelry shop in 1945. The stone was being sold as a spinel, which is easily understandable except for one point. Spinel in singly refractive and Taaffeite is doubly refractive. This attribute can be recognized by an experienced and learned eye. This was the first mineral to ever be described from an already faceted stone. Very little of this mineral exist and many of those were sold as Spinel. This is a large Taaffeite, being nearly 2.5 carats. The stone is exceptionally clean for any type of stone, but especially a rare stone. It is a light purple color and glitters beautifully in the hand. I have not been able to replace a Taaffeite in this size, and it is very likely I will never have a great one like this again. Enjoy!
