Wastewater treatment is an energy intensive process. Currently we employ many different treatment processes at various different stages of treatment to remove compounds and put water back into its good use.
The only energy we get out of this process is through biogas produced using anaerobic digestion. However, it is not efficient when contaminants are low in concentration.
More than 100 years ago, a professor at Newcastle University discovered that bacteria can produce electricity as a by-product when decomposing organic matter.
This is excellent symbiotic process for our wastewater treatment where we need to remove organic matter and earn some energy back. This process can be configured in various different arrangements to gain benefits from it, depending on the application.
This talk will explore this topic and present some recent findings of applicability of these benign bacteria.
