Extended Range BrahMos Test Fired
As per the latest reports Indian Air Force has successfully test fired Extended Range Version of BrahMos Air Launched missile from Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. The launch from the aircraft was as planned & the missile achieved a direct hit on designated target in Bay of Bengal region. This is the 9th Test of BrahMos Missile by India excluding the misfiring of BrahMos which landed in Pakistan.
Also, this is the 3rd test of Extended range BrahMos and 2nd test from SU-30 MKI this year. One BrahMos missile costs close to Rs 30 Crore. Considering the 9 tests of BrahMos Missile, India has spent Rs 270 crore just on the test firing of BrahMos missile from sea, land and air this year.
800KM stand-off distance
BrahMos and SU-30 MKI is itself a deadly combination. SU-30 MKI which is the back bone of Indian Airforce is a bigger and very powerful platform. The fighter has the combat range of 3000KM just with the internal fuel tank. It can further be extended by external fuel tanks or mid-air refuelling. BrahMos integration with Su-30 MKIs has been game changer. The BrahMos has range of 290KM and if you add the Sukhoi's range it becomes 3290KMs.
Now since the Air Force has tested the Extended Range BrahMos it adds up additional 300KM to the range, which means a SU-30 MKI can now target any naval vessel or a target deep inside the enemy territory. While the range of extended range BrahMos has not been officially declared, it should be between 600-800KM. The range of the air launched extended BrahMos will be always more than what is launched from surface as it will have advantage of altitude and initial speed of SU-30 MKI.
Deadly Duo
This makes the BrahMos a very safe and lethal platform. Safe because of the huge stand-off distance. The mother ship launching the missile will be far from the reach of even surface to air missile system like S-400. And lethal because no air defence at present can counter the launch of 2 BrahMos missile. This capability is big achievement for Indian Air force it can even target Chinese S-400 with SU-30 MKIs.
Dedicated Su-30 MKI squadron with BrahMos
Considering the deadly combination of SU-30 MKI and BrahMos, IAF has a dedicated squadron of SU-30 MKIs modified to Launch BrahMos Missile setup in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu to protect the India’s Maritime interests. 50 IAF SU-30MKI will be modified to carry the BrahMos-A missile, these modified Su-30MKIs will have electronic circuits capable of withstanding nuclear electromagnetic pulse. IAF plans to procure 200 BrahMos-A missiles.
