With the increase in suicidal ideation and attempts as well as death by suicide, we are urged to reconsider assessing and attending to the level of risk for young people in our care (Westers & Plener, 2020). As providers, we can attend to both risk and protective factors early in services to support young people in the best way possible. This webinar discusses the latest suicide statistics among children and adolescents, highlight the need for adequate screening protocol, and explain how to safety plan with a client who is at risk for suicide. We can change the statistic and implications for suicide as a leading cause of death in late childhood and adolescence worldwide (Bilsen, 2018).
Learning objectives: By the end of this presentation, those in attendance will be able to:
1. Discuss the latest suicide statistics among children and adolescents
2. Identify at least two suicide screening tools
3. Explain how to safety plan with a client who is at risk for suicide
